Frequently Asked Questions

updated 10/19/2009
  1. Q - How do I get on the WALL?
A - photoWALL is a true real-time, showing photos as they happen anywhere around the Globe!  To get your photo on the wall, you must have a supported mobile phone that can run third-party applications.  We currently support iPhone, Palm Pre, Windows Mobile 6+, Nokia N & E Series and many Sony Ericsson mobiles.

  2. Q - Is this a free service?
A - Yes, photoWALL is a free service.  However, you are responsible for your mobile data charges.
Customers with unlimited data plans can enjoy our service at No Cost!

Customers with pay-as-you-go or prepaid data plans will be happy to know, our technology DOES NOT use SMS (text messaging) or MMS (picture messaging).  We use standard Internet protocols to upload photos from your mobile.  A recent analysis shows our method allows most customers to send 10 photos for the price of 1 photo using MMS!

  3. Q - I pay for each KB of data I send, what is the size of the photos that the mobile app sends?
A - We upload photos at 640x480/480x640 - approximate size is 50KB - 80KB (depending on the mobile camera quality).

  4. Q - If I add a VoiceTag to my photo, does this increase the data uploaded?
A - Yes, a typical VoiceTag adds approximately 50KB to the data upload.

  5. Q - Why do you limit a VoiceTag to 7 seconds?
A - Most mobile devices capture the audio raw, with no compression.  When a mobile platform supports compression, our app will use it.  In our customer testing, 7 seconds was long enough to convey the moment and still upload in a timely manner.

  6. Q - I installed the app and it says "Sorry, photoWALL does not support this phone." - ONLY Nokia and Sony Ericsson mobiles.
A - This means our app cannot access the camera, or cannot capture the photo at a high enough resolutions of at least 640x480.  Although your phone may support this resolution, our Java app is not able to access the camera.  This is due to how the manufacturer implemented Java on your phone.

  7. Q - I took a photo, but it is not on the Global Wall.
A - Thousands of photos are posted every hour to photoWALL.  Every 5 seconds, a new live photo is randomly selected for the Global Wall.  The odds of your photo showing on the Global Wall are better when activity is lower or if you take many photos!  If your photo hits the Global Wall, this photo will receive a comment on the photo saying "This photo appeared on the Global Wall."

  8. Q - How do I see my photos if they do not make the Globall Wall?
A - All of your photos will appear on My Wall.

  9. Q - What are my privacy options for photos?
A - After you take a photo with our mobile app, you can set the privacy for the photo.  The options are:
Public:  Photo can be viewed by all and may show up on the Global Wall
My Network:  Photo is only visible by you and friends in your Network
Private: Only you can see this photo

  10. Q - I took a photo and now the mobile application says my account is disabled due to inappropriate content.
A - When you sign up for photoWALL, you agree to our Terms of Use.  We do not allow any nudity, violence, crime or socially offensive content.  Our quality control personal preview all content and if you violate our terms, your account is immediately cancelled.  photoWALL is a family friendly service.

  11. Q - My photos never make it to the Global Wall, why?
A - One reason may be due to selecting the photo from your native camera roll.  We only allow live photos to display on the Global Wall.

  12. Q - How do I send my photos to Facebook, Flickr or Twitter from the mobile app?
A -Under your Name (top right), select 'My Destinations Sites'.  Here you can setup these accounts to authorize photoWALL to send photos on your behalf.  From our mobile app, you can turn on/off the sending to one or more destinations.  We will include the title as well and a link back to this photo.  Public photos can go to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter; Network photos to Facebook and Flickr (to your friends); Private photos are never forwarded.

  13. Q - How can I send a VoiceTag to a Destination site or via email?
A - VoiceTags are unique to photoWALL, thus other sites do not support this feature of associating a photo with an audio file.  When sending your photo to a Destination site, we include the link back to photoWALL - allowing the VoiceTag to be played.

  14. Q - You don't support my phone, what is the roll-out plan for additional mobile support?
A - At launch, we support Windows Mobile 6+, iPhone, Palm Pre, Sony Ericsson (approx 30 models) and Nokia N & E Seriers (approx. 30 models).  We plan to add Android by December, 2009; Blackberry early 2010.

  15. Q - How do you protect my location from showing?
A - photoWALL is all about location.  We only show you, the photo owner, the exact location.  Others see your photo in the general location (within 1km or .6 Miles).  If you are concerned about your location, send your photos as Network or Private.

  16. Q - How do i find friends to follow?
A - Go to 'My Network' and select 'Find Friends'.  Note: adding someone to your network only allows you to see their public photos.  They must in turn, add you to their network in order for you to view their Network photos.  A buddy icon will appear next to their name if they are following you.  Establishing 'Mutual Friends' and sending Network photos is a great way to create a private network.

  17. Q - Are my Network and Private photos screened by the QC process?  If so, why?
A - Yes all photos (Public, Network, Private) will go into a QC queue and if the content violates our Terms of Use, we will remove the photos and your account may be disabled.  photoWALL only wants family friendly content!

  18. Q - I don't want strangers sending my photos to Facebook!
A - We only allow the photo owner to send photos to Flickr and Facebook.  However, we do allow any customer to send the link of a Public photo to Facebook or Twitter.
