
Color is one of the most observable attributes of the world around us. For youngsters, learning the fundamentals of colors is an essential building block which can be used for learning all other aspects of life. Thus designing the nursery should not be taken for granted and should be considered as one of the most important elements. Choosing the appropriate color for the nursery at times can be tricky. Commonly, we base our color choices on our own preferences. The truth is color selection is not an easy process. Studies have shown that color has different effects on the human body and mind. These should be carefully considered when painting the nursery.
The colors and their significance in the nursery
Studies in the field of psychology have shown that colors can influence mood and behavior, as well as stimulate the brain and body. So before putting up those beautiful wall mural decorations in the room of your child, take time to consider the psychological effects of colors to babies. Â
In general, there are two categories of colors, being warm and cold colors.Â
Warm colors – these colors are known to elicit happiness and comfort. They create intimacy by making the space feel cozy. It has been studied that the warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow can stimulate the mind and have an energizing effect to the body. The colors can contribute to the growth and development of the baby, however they are not recommended when putting your baby to sleep. It is probable that you will encounter an energetic toddler. Therefore, the use of warm colors should only be in moderation.
   Red – the color is known to energize the body, increase the heart rate, blood pressure and respiration. A number of        studies say that the color is linked with increased athletic ability as well as aggressiveness. Unfortunately, studies have    also shown that exposure to color red may affect the academic performance of your child.
   Pink – the color evokes empathy and femininity, as well as a calming atmosphere. Extended exposure to the color may     be irritating which may lead to agitation and anxiety.
   Yellow – the color is associated with happiness and motivation, especially bright and cheery yellow. While soft and        subtle yellow promotes concentration and brighter shades can stimulate the memory and metabolism of the baby.         Overuse of the color, unfortunately, can evoke anger and frustration, which may result to over-stimulated babies.
   Orange – it is a friendly and welcoming color. Orange is believed to have a social nature which promotes interpersonal     communication and make people contented. Over exposure can likewise be over stimulating.
Cool colors – these colors are known to have calming effects on the body and can make the nursery feel spacious and relaxing. However, cool colors can leave people feel cold and reserved. It is highly recommended that cool colors be paired with neutral colors, soft fabrics and comfortable accessories.
   Blue – commonly used as a color for baby boy nursery. The color calms the mind and body, lowers the blood pressure,     heart rate and respiration. Blue also decreases the feelings of anxiety and aggression. As such, children who have          trouble in sleeping or tantrums may benefit from spending time in an environment with blue color.
  Purple – mostly associated with wisdom and spirituality. Purple is a combination of blue and red and takes the traits of   the two colors. Purple has a luxurious feel and associated with wealth and royalty.
  Green – the color of nature and promotes a serene and calming environment. Green is linked with health and well-        being. It has a soothing effect on the mind and body. The color is known to reduce anxiety and promotes concentration.    Studies have shown that the color green may also increase the ability to read.

Color plays important roles in creating and setting mood in the nursery. Though during the first few months of the baby, they still cannot distinguish colors since their eyes are still developing. Babies will and always reach a certain age where they will be able to recognize colors. Color psychology tells us that colors have their certain effects to the growth and development of the baby. Thus, the use of the appropriate color in the nursery can help in honing the mind and body of the baby. However, this is not a strict science. It means that if you feel differently about colors based on your beliefs and preferences then that is just fine. If your baby loves warm colors and is happy with them, then use warm colors. After all, the whole point of decorating the nursery is making your baby happy.
