Historical perspective of the Easter decorations and practices

Why do we commonly see eggs, chicks, bunnies and hares during Easter? What do they mean and how come they are popular Easter decorations all over the globe?

To start with, Easter eggs and chicks go back during the Pagan times. They are associated with Easter because they eggs and chicks are signs of fertility and new life. This concept was adapted from the Pagan and used the concept of New Life for the resurrection and having New Life with Jesus Christ. Eggs, on the other hand, were adapted from the ancient practices of Persians and Egyptians to celebrate New Year which usually occurs during spring time. People during that time color the eggs and are eaten during the celebrations. In Eastern European countries, they paint wooden eggs with different patterns which have meanings and names to tell the Easter story. There was also a jeweler in Russia during the early 20th century who crafted Easter Eggs and was given to royalties. The egg then was made of precious metals and jewels that were kept and displayed in museums.

Many countries also celebrate Easter by egg hunting activities. Eggs are hidden around the garden or house. Children participate in the said activity to look for the hidden eggs. Adults even add excitement to the kids by telling them that the eggs were hidden by the Easter hare or bunny.

Another interesting practice is the Egg rolling races which are held usually during Easter Monday in many countries. Eggs are rolled down a slope or hill and the objective is that the egg should reach the finish line without getting broken.

Another popular symbols during Easter are the bunnies, rabbits and lambs. This is because most baby animals are born during Spring and around Easter time. These baby animals are also signs of good luck and new life, just like the eggs. In the Bible, the lamb is symbolized by Jesus Christ who was sacrificed for the salvation of humans.
