What is a chalkboard?

Chalkboard or often times called blackboard, is a reusable writing surface on which text or drawings are made chalk. Originally, chalk boards were made of smooth, thin sheets of black or dark gray slate stone. It can be as simple as a board painted with matte dark paint. The start of the use and manufacturing of chalkboard was in 1840’s. Since then, chalkboards have been upgraded so that users may be able to take advantage in using the better technology.

There are many good things that you get when using chalkboards. Chalkboards do not need any special care, unlike the electronic gadgets wherein you have to maintain it. Chalk can easily be erased from the board by simply using a damp cloth or the chalkboard eraser. Using the chalkboard is cheaper compared to the other writing materials. However, there are also disadvantages in using chalk boards such as allergic reactions to the dust produce by the chalk, which can be a health problem for some individuals.

In the house, the chalkboard can be used to write notes, menu, messages, shopping list, phone numbers and many other uses. They can be placed anywhere as long as you see where it is needed the most. You can add chalkboard in the bedroom of your kid so that it may be used to write messages or even as a learning material where you can tutor your kid at home. Chalkboard can be strategically placed in any parts of the house as long as they fit and blend into the decor in that part.

Hang a Chalkboard in the kitchen

Kitchen chalkboards are important in such a way that they serve different functions. By practice, we post notes in the refrigerator and sometimes you do not notice it, the notes are already piling up. We tend not to throw away old notes maybe because we just forget about them and are too lazy to clean them up. By having a chalkboard, this would be prevented and as such, we may maintain the cleanliness and the brightness of the kitchen.

Kitchen chalkboards can serve as a writing area for our important memos and notes. For example, we could write there the things that should be accomplished within the day or if we are able to see a good recipe for a dinner menu, we could take note of them using the chalkboard. In that way, we do not have to bother ourselves in looking for the piece of paper where we wrote them if they are misplaced. Emergency phone numbers can also be written on the chalkboards so that we may be able to see them easily if the need arises. You can also write messages to your household members so that they may be able top access it easily without asking you about it.

It is also to erase old notes and memos from the chalkboard. All you need is a damp cloth or by using a chalkboard eraser. In that way, we could write new notes and memos again.

Having a chalkboard in the kitchen is one way of maintaining the organization of the room as well as the whole house. We would be able to limit the clutter of memo pads and post its in the kitchen as well as the whole house. Some would also use the chalkboard as writing areas for kids who are fond of imitating their school teacher. This would somehow prevent the kids from writing on the walls.

The DIY Kitchen Chalkboard

Hanging a kitchen chalkboard is not that expensive. As a matter of fact, you can create your own by using affordable materials.

Materials needed:

1 old picture frame, preferably a light weight one                             ruler                          

1 roll chalkboard paper                                                                             craft scissors

cardboard or poster board cut to fit the frame                                    pencil

cutting material                                                                                           hanging strips

cutting guide                                                                                                chalkboard

Procedure:

1. Prepare the picture frame by discarding the cardboard or the placeholder photo from the frame.

2. Prepare the cardboard or the poster paper by cutting it according to the size that will fit into the frame.

3. Cut the chalkboard paper accordingly so that it would exactly on top of the cardboard of the poster paper.

4. The chalkboard paper comes with its own adhesive so make sure that the paper is smoothly attached to the cardboard.

5. Stick the hanging strips onto the picture frame and the amount depends on the weight and size of the frame.

6. Mark the part of the wall where you will hang the frame with a pencil.

7. Hang the chalkboard on the marked part o the wall.

Note: The chalkboard should be placed on the area where everybody can see and access them easily.
