
Stephen Sills – creator of original atmosphere
Stephen Sills is one of the celebrated interior designers, who is known for transforming interiors into timeless and unique environments for modern living. He values his clients by approaching his every project with sensitivity to architecture, function, and history of the space. In addition to these, Stephen Sills creates an original atmosphere customized for creative clients with their own point of view. Some of his notable clients are Tina Turner, Wes Gordon and several members of the Rockefeller family.
Biography of Stephen Sills
Stephen Sills was born in 1951 in Durant, Oklahoma. He is a visionary interior decorator who mixed innovation with deep regard for history that attracted famous clients, such as Vera Wang and Tina Turner. He received his bachelor’s degree in interior design from University of North Texas. He then went to Paris for three years where he worked with Hank Gremillion. After having a good time in Paris, he eventually went back to the United States and worked as a decorator in Dallas. He then moved to New York in 1982 to further practice his profession.
Of all the masterpieces Stephen Sills has done, it was his own three-roomer, bought for him by his father, that mesmerized the design world. Whenever he needs to design something, he does not need to go to other places for inspirations. All he needed were pictures from magazines that are pinned on his wall.
His success story
Stephen Sills is a hard working individual and very passionate about the research and development aspect. The R and D aspect focuses on getting into the character, client by client. He approaches his design projects with sensitivity to the architecture, function, and history of the space which eventually enriches the vision of the client. He brings together furnishings that span around 400 years, as well as innovative selections of surfaces, textures and color.
The first major client of Stephen Sills was Nan Swid, who is a world renowned collector of modern art, a philanthropist and a former designer. Stephen Sill designed the house of Nan Swid in South Hampton.
The second major project was from Vera Wang who asked Stephen Sills to decorate her apartment on Park Avenue.
Nowadays, his office is flourishing and the projects include beachfront estates in Naples, Florida and Southampton, New York; two apartments in Miami; the conversion of two pre-war buildings in Manhattan to luxury co-ops; the Chevalier Restaurant and two private residences in Baccarat Hotel.
Architectural Digest described his works as “a lucid synthesis of opulence, rigor, and surprise.”. Most of his works has been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, House and Garden, Vogue, Maison and Jardin, W, New York Times Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, and many others. The residence of Sills in Bedford is included in Dominic Bradbury’s American Designers at Home, and HGTV’s Top 10 Most Beautiful Homes. Sills was included in Elle Decor’s A List of the Top 25 Designers and is a member of Architectural Digest’s AD100.
