More often than not, they leave the bathroom the last room to attend to. However, it is an important one. If you say that cleaning the bathroom is disinfecting the toilet, sink, and shower, then what you are doing is not enough. There are certain parts in the room that can harbor dirt and germs that must be cleaned to avoid detrimental effects.

1. Improper use of cleaning agents – Haste makes waste. This slogan is true in all cases. There are so many instances that people do not follow the instructions in using cleaning solutions. People spray the surfaces of their bathroom and immediately start wiping them. You are not actually giving the cleaning agent enough time to do its job. Bacteria and other germs need to be soaked in disinfectants for certain period of time. Soaking the germs in the time specified in the instructions will kill most of them. Therefore, follow instructions properly.

2. Combining different cleaning agents – Do not forget that cleaning agents are made from toxic chemicals. Chemicals may react with each other causing harmful effects. So never mix them. Bleach and ammonia, for instance can damage your lungs.

3. Forgetting small areas - Certain parts of the bathroom that are frequently touched are rarely cleaned. This include light switches, faucets, toilet paper holders, toothbrush holders, cabinet handles. Check these parts regularly as germs will definitely accumulate if they are not attended to. Germs may cause stomach flu, cold, and other related illnesses.

4. Partial cleaning of the toilet – Which part of the toilet gets cleaned regularly. Usually its only the toilet seat that gets cleaned. How about the other parts? Do not forget the other parts as dirt accumulate easily in them. Partial cleaning of the toilet is not good enough to say that you have disinfected it.

5. Use the exhaust fan – Exhaust fan in bathroom is not just for releasing any unwanted smell coming from the room. One of the reasons why you have exhaust fan installed in the bathroom is to avoid the buildup of fungus such as mildew. After having your shower, leave the fan on for around 15-20 minutes to help in the absorption of moisture in the air. If you do not have an exhaust fan installed, but the room has a window, open them up. This will likewise help in the process.

6. Wet toilet brush – Many microorganisms love moisture, which include bacteria, fungus, mold. Specifically, they thrive in dark, warm and moist environment. Toilet brush are often kept and stored while it still has moisture in it. This will allow the propagation of the said microorganisms. Make sure that they are completely dry before keeping them. In addition to these, the brush and handle should also be disinfected.

7. Do not forget the shower curtain liner – Bacteria, mold and fungus grown everywhere as long as the condition is right. Once the growth is evident in the liner then wash it at once. Adding ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of vinegar while rinsing it will help in disinfecting the curtain liner. In addition to this, after shower, pull the curtain closed so as to prevent the growth of molds.
