The city of Los Angeles

Los Angeles or simply L.A. is the second most populous city in the United States. The city is the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed as the “City of angels” because of its Spanish meaning. It is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Historically, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. It was officially founded by the Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve on September 4, 1781. It became part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. At the end of Mexican - American War in 1848, the city and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which made the city part of the United States.
