Room décor for teens – a useful guide

How would you describe a teenager’s room? Some parents would describe the teen’s room as a battleground. All drawers are open, used clothes are everywhere, phone and gadget chargers are under the bed, body colognes and other stuff are on the bed. Practically, you cannot walk without stepping on something. The room is literally a war zone. No need to be mad about this. Remember, they are teens.

Experts say that if this is an issue and you have the tendency to prolong it, teens will just assert their boundaries and say no. Parents are advised to let it go. Teenage years are considered to be an awkward stage. Teens are so preoccupied and confused with who they want to be that they lose track of the outside world. Their chaotic mind reflects the sight that you see in their room.

The teen’s room may be their own sanctuary. It is a place where they can relax and get some peace. As parents, what can we do to help our teens in this grueling times? We can always assist them and be open with them. Show them that they are important and explain the changes that are happening in their body and their surroundings. One good thing is to engage them in various activities such as letting them design and decorate their own rooms. The design they want for their room is most probably a reflection of their own personality. This would be the best time to bond with them and get to know them better.

Decorating the teen’s room is quite enjoyable, especially if you engage your teen in designing their own nook. There are endless possibilities in making their room beautiful and vibrant. Here are a few tips on how to make this project successful:

1. Teach them to start an idea book and create a floor plan.
This can be started by searching for inspirations such as images from various references and collect them to create an idea book. The images that you and your child collect may give them some idea on what they want their room to look like. Once you have a general concept on what to do with the room, then it is time to create the floor plan.

2. Conceptualize the color and lighting of the room.
Once you have finalized the style of the room, then it’s time to think about the color of the paint that you will use. Experts recommend the use of extra-large paint swatches or better yet get sample-size amounts to try them out directly on the wall. This is suggested before buying enough for the whole room to avoid mistakes and wasting money. You can also put up a wallpaper design that your teen loves.

The addition of lighting can change a lot in the room’s appearance. Plan for the lighting that you will be using. Create the appropriate ambiance with the use of cafe lights that are strung across the ceiling. Dimmer switch is recommended for an overhead lighting fixture. Task lighting is highly recommended for the study area.

3. Plan the furniture pieces to add.
Do an inventory of the furniture pieces that you have. Note the furniture pieces that you want to keep and be sold or given away. Do not forget that you can still update or upgrade some of the existing furniture pieces by painting them or changing the knobs. Also check your storage areas for other pieces that you may have missed. If ever you have kept old furniture pieces, ask your teen what he or she wants to do with them. They might have special plans for them and may save you some cash.

4. Buy new items for the teen’s room.
If all kept treasures have been reused or sold, then it is time to shop for new items that can also be used for your teen’s first apartment or dorm room. This will save you money considerably. Examples are side tables, throws, bedding, chairs, and different decorative items.

5. Visit antique or flea stores.
Antique shops and flea markets must not be neglected. They have items that can look great in the room of your teen at a very affordable price.

6. Add photos of family and friends.
Let your teen choose the pictures that they want printed and displayed. Some of these printed photos may be framed or taped in a rotating display. Teach them to create a photo wall gallery that they would cherish until they reach adulthood.

7. Do not forget the study area.
The study area in the room of your teen is probably one of the important areas. Ask your child on how to decorate them since they will be the one to use it during their studies. You may add creative and useful cork or chalk boards where they can add lists, photos and inspirations. Chair and study desk should be of considerable sizes. Task lighting is a necessity and you may also add extra storage space for their school stuffs and other things. Additional storage spaces will help in preventing the buildup of clutter.

8. Hangout area.
Use old sofa, comfortable chair or bean bag from your storage areas to create a perfect hangout area for your teen. Cushions, fluffy rug may be used if the space is limited.

9. Personalize the room.
Ask your teen what else to add such as certain items for their hobbies. Guitar, sport stuffs, art materials, and many more. With these, your teen may be engaged in the stuffs they like to further enhance their growth and development.

Happy decorating!
