There are also times when you would stay in the bathroom for a long period of time for pampering, relaxing, and other related activities. Think of it as your personal sanctuary. Therefore, renovating the bathroom to make it look more modern or to enlarge the space is just right. However, giving the bathroom a new look may be an expensive proposition. Costs will only go higher if common renovation mistakes cannot be avoided. It is therefore necessary that homeowners and designers be able to know and learn the different common mistakes in renovating the bathroom.

The common mistakes when renovating the bathroom

Renovating the bathroom takes a lot of time, money, and effort. What we want to avoid is to spending most of them in just one room because of certain mistakes that can be prevented. Here are some of the common mistakes that are committed in renovation projects:

1. Going over the allotted budget – without proper planning, you could go beyond your own budget since there may be things that need to be added. Proper planning before doing the actual project will give you a bird’s eye view on what your bathroom is suppose to look like and the materials that you will be needing. However, if this is not done properly, you may end up spending more of the things that were not in the original plan.

2. Lack of ventilation – “less is more” is a common slogan especially in minimalism. An overcrowded bathroom will only result to poor ventilation which we would like to avoid in a room which experiences moisture most of the time. Without proper ventilation, there is a high probability that moisture will not be able to escape the room. Thus allowing the growth of certain microorganisms such as bacteria and mildew.

3. Overcrowding the bathroom – try to maximize the space as much as possible to avoid the accumulation of clutter. Remember that the bathroom should also be a place to relax. A cramped room will not give you the desired appearance you have been dreaming of.

4. Insufficient lighting – there are many bathroom activities that require proper lighting, such as shaving, applying make up, and hair styling. It is recommended that a large mirror over the basin to reflect light. Better yet, install the proper task light so that you will have the proper illumination.

5. Poor drainage – of course we all know what will happen if you have a poor drainage. What we do not want is having puddles everywhere. Therefore the tiler should be able to set the floor so that water will go directly to the drain.

6. Permeable materials – all materials in the bathroom should be protected from moisture. If not, the water will just cause them to swell, and discolor with time.

7. Lack of storage – just like in any other room of the house, the bathroom also needs storage. Medicines, make up, other cosmetic products, hairdryers, shavers, towels, and many others, need proper storage. If not, you will only see them everywhere. In addition to that, items that are not stored properly will just clutter in the bathroom that may impede the flow in the room.
