1950s home decor and design – times of peace
1950’s is the decade when the economy in both Europe and the United States is starting to grow. This simply means that many people are investing and that construction of houses and other infrastructures are starting to boom. It was also observed that the architectural style was becoming more industrialized and sparked in resources that goes with the modern materials.
Common features of the 1950s home décor and design
It may be common to see homes that are open to allow the natural air in the house. Screens were used instead of walls and sliding glass doors and floor to ceiling windows make the home more spacious and allow the natural light in.
The interiors is usually bright wherein the color of the walls were in neutral colors or paneled in light wood. The seating, furniture and the flooring can be seen in bright colors. Carpet is still being used during this era, however there are homeowners who prefer the use of vinyl, cork or concrete for easy cleaning. Geometric shapes can be found in the lighting, furniture and other decorative pieces around the home. It is evident that minimalism is popular during this decade.
Designers during this decade were producing furniture at a large scale. Raw materials used were plastic, glass and plexiglass.
The kitchen is also amazing and considered the heart of the home. Turquoise colors were used to provide the room with warm touch. The kitchen was often used during that time. Families even eat their meals there even if they have a dining room.
1950’s interior design ideas
The outlook during this decade is positive despite the looming threat in nuclear war and the Cold War. The rooms and furniture design were also innovative, however as time passes by, the popularity has ended. However, nowadays, the 50’s design is on its come back.
1. Colors – basically there were three major colors at that time: pastel, modern and Scandinavian.
2. Fabrics – fabrics have bold designs. Stars, stripes, checks and polka dots were among the popular ones. Likewise, designs such as fruits, flowers and abstract designs were often seen.
3. Furniture – the most common are the traditional upholstered furniture, and Scandinavian with light colored woods and clean lines. Vinyl chairs were also widely used which were topped with Formica to make them stylish and durable.
4. Flooring – linoleum were commonly used as flooring in many households. It was designed bright and colorful so that it would be more vibrant and dynamic.
5. Accessories – material that was commonly used were plastic, wood and metal, and the most common motif is atomic. Colorful melamine and melmac dishware as well as Tupperware storage containers were popular during the 50’s. Lamps as well were not just used as such but as an interior design as well.
6. The 50’s design focuses more on the clean designs with influence from the Scandinavian design. Mid Century design means the use of space and atomic inspired shapes.
7. Popular also is the use of Western design such as cowboys.
8. Families then are focusing more on comfort and leisure. They were moving from the city to the suburbs where they made interior design more fun and vibrant.
