Austin wall murals and history
Nomadic tribes of Tonkawas, Comanches and Lipan Apaches camped and hunted along the creeks for hundreds of years before the first permanent Anglo settlers arrived in 1830 and called this then village "Waterloo". In 1839, tiny Waterloo was chosen to be the capital of the new Republic of Texas. A new city was built as fast as possible in the wilderness, and was named after Stephen F. Austin, who is referred to as "the father of Texas." In the late 19th century, Austin was known as the "City of the Violet Crown", because of the colourful glow of light across the hills just after sunset.
