Carl Larsson (1853 - 1919) was a Swedish painter representative of the Arts and Crafts movement. A lot of his works include oils, watercolors, and frescoes. He considered his finest work to be Midvinterblot (Midwinter Sacrifice), a large painting now displayed inside Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts. Carl Larsson was born in the old town of Stockholm. In his biography, written by Renated Puvogel, Larsson had an unhappy childhood. His mother was thrown out of the house, together with Carl and his brother Johan. After living in temporary dwellings, the family moved into waht is now called Ostermalm. As was said, the place was the natural breeding ground for cholera. The father of Carl worked as a casual laborer, sailed as a stoker on a ship headed for Scandinavia, and lost the lease to a nearby mill, only to work there later as a mere grain carrier. At the age of thirteen, his teacher Jacobsen, urged him to apply to the “principskola” of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, and fortunately he was accepted. Larsson felt socially inferior during his first year as a student in the Academy. In 1869, he was promoted to the “antique school” of the said academy. He then gained confidence and became a central figure in student life. Larsson earned his first medal in nude drawing. He then gained experience working as a caricaturist for the humorous paper Kasper and as a graphic artist for the newspaper Ny Illustrerad Tidning. His income eventually is enough to support his parents. After several years, he moved to Paris where he became frustrated working as an artist. He then made connection with Swedish artists and settled with other painter colleagues in 1882. Through his paintings and books, Little Hyttnas has become one of the most famous artist’s homes in the world, transmitting the artistic taste of its creators and making it a major line in Swedish interior design. With the development of color reproduction, the popularity of Carl larsson also grew. Especially when the Swedish publisher Bonnie published books written and illustrated by Carl Larsson.-
